When I look back on my journey—from soldier to civilian, from silence to storytelling—I realize that Stand Proud is more than just a project. It’s a continuation of my service, a way to carry forward the values I learned in uniform and to give voice to those who often feel unheard.
Why I Started
I started Stand Proud because I know what it feels like to carry invisible weight. Veterans often walk through life with stories tucked away in the shadows—memories of deployments, transitions, and battles both seen and unseen. Too often, these stories stay silent because we don’t want to burden others, or because we fear they won’t understand.
But silence can be heavy. I’ve lived that silence, and I’ve also felt the power that comes when we finally speak.
Stand Proud was born out of the desire to create a social group where minority veterans could share their voices unapologetically. A space that says: you don’t have to water down your story. You don’t have to hide the messy parts. You don’t have to feel like you’re walking this path alone.
What I Hope to Gain
I don’t see Stand Proud as mine alone—it’s something I hope grows through every veteran who steps forward and shares. What I hope to gain is simple, but deeply meaningful:
- Connection. I want veterans to find each other here, to see themselves reflected in stories that sound like their own, and to know that someone out there understands.
- Healing. Not the kind of healing that fixes everything, but the kind that reminds you that your scars have meaning, and your journey matters. Sometimes just telling your story—or listening to someone else’s—is enough to start that process.
- Community Impact. I hope Stand Proud becomes a bridge between veterans and the communities we live in. Too often, civilians only see the uniform, not the human being inside it. By sharing openly, we can build empathy, understanding, and stronger bonds.
- Personal Growth. Every story I help lift up teaches me something new. I grow as a leader, an artist, and as a veteran myself. My hope is that Stand Proud will challenge me to keep evolving—just as it invites others to do the same.
The Bigger Picture
At its heart, Stand Proud is about turning service into legacy. It’s about making sure our stories don’t fade with time but instead inspire the next generation to serve, to create, to lead, and to heal.
I started this because I believe in the power of storytelling, and I believe in the resilience of the veteran community. And while I don’t know exactly where this journey will take us, I know one thing for certain: together, we’ll stand proud.
